The area where the UID number will help insurers the most is Microinsurance. A major chunk of India’s population can be brought under the ambit of insurance, who currently do not have the access to it for the want of proper identification. The database could help customers move from one health insurer to another. While the benefits are obvious, there are several issues that need to be addressed and it will be some time before the UID number is used for anything other than addressing KYC requirements in the insurance business.
